Over the past five years, painting for Stations of the Cross challenged me and, this year, the challenge was enormous. Friday 27 March, two days after our country went into lockdown, I started sketching the picture. The theme, Pathways, and the description in John’s Gospel of Jesus on the way to the Cross introduced a plethora of ideas. I painted the picture over and over again, never satisfied with the result. The deadline loomed. Still, I was not satisfied. An artist is never satisfied. But the Deadline says, “It is DONE!” and now I’ve called the picture - THE WAY.
On the left, are scenes of drought, an earthquake and a stormy sky. In the forefront, is a family embarking on a journey. To the right, children walk into deeper water and further ahead fugitives (migrants, refugees, etc) look for greener pastures. The aircraft overhead symbolises an aim for higher ideals and the moon and stars suggest a fantasy world. Central is a Cross / Star descending in a broken entranceway. We live in a world with so many known and unknown terrors. Scripture answers my questions…
